How SME’s Can Benefit from AI Tools, Today

27th September 2023

Artificial Intelligence (AI) once felt like something only large corporations could access—complex, expensive, and out of reach. That’s no longer the case. Today, many of the tools small and medium-sized businesses already rely on, such as Microsoft 365 or popular cloud-based apps, quietly include built-in AI features. There’s no need to start from scratch or hire a team of data scientists. The real opportunity lies in making better use of what’s already available to make everyday work easier.

Real-world AI use-cases for small and medium businesses

Streamline emails and document management: Automatically summarise long email threads, extract action items, and draft responses to save time and reduce manual effort.

Automate routine administrative tasks: Let AI handle meeting scheduling, reminders, and document routing so your team can focus on higher-value work.

Enhance customer interactions: A simple AI-powered chatbot on your website can answer common questions, collect customer details, and allow your staff to focus on more complex queries.

Gain better insights from your data: AI-enabled dashboards can present live business data and highlight trends—such as slow-moving products or overdue payments—helping you make faster, more informed decisions.

Get your data in shape: AI delivers the best results when your information is clean, consistent, and well-organised. If data is scattered or inaccurate, outcomes will suffer. It’s also essential to ensure that any new tools comply with your company’s privacy and security policies. And while AI can automate and enhance many tasks, it should complement (not replace) human judgment, especially in small businesses where relationships and experience still matter.

The best approach is to start small. Choose one process to improve, test an AI tool, measure the results, and build from there.

Apple, Microsoft & Google Release Zero-Day Patches – Why you must act quickly!

5th May 2023

IT Security icon

April 2023 brought an unusual alignment of behemoths across the tech industry as Apple, Microsoft and Google all released urgent zero-day security patches to fix vulnerabilities that were already being exploited in active attacks. For small and mid-sized businesses this is a strong reminder that patch management isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the frontline of defence.

Zero-day vulnerabilities are flaws that attackers discover and weaponise before the vendor can issue a fix. This means organisations relying on out-of-date software versions and systems are exposed to real-world threats with no built-in protection.

In April’s case, the vulnerabilities affected major platforms including iOS, macOS, Windows and Google Chrome. Platforms and OS’s that almost every business uses daily!

Attackers use zero-day exploits to gain footholds in networks, elevate privileges, steal credentials, or deploy malware. Because these attacks often bypass traditional antivirus tools, the only reliable defence is timely patching. Unfortunately, many smaller organisations struggle with patch cycles due to limited resources, fear of disruption or lack of priority given to IT security.

The simultaneous wave of patches from three major vendors drives home a key point: cybercriminals are increasingly aggressive in exploiting newly discovered vulnerabilities, and the window between discovery and attack is shrinking.

For business owners: patching should be prioritised and ideally, automated, centrally managed or consistently monitored.

At Hedgehog IT, we can take this burden off your business and by employing considered and routine maintenance of your infrastructure or systems, can ensure your IT security is tightened with best-preventative measures against cyber threats. Our advice is to treat security updates with the same urgency as any other operational risk.

Implement automated patching where possible, enforce update requirements on employee devices and make sure your IT team (or your managed service provider) has full oversight of patch compliance. Quick action on zero-day patches can mean the difference between business as usual and a costly security incident.

If you’re unsure of your security status, when, how or if your systems are patched and up to date, get in touch and we can evaluate your current setup and situation. Our maintenance plans are cost effective and can be tailored to provide the level of service and response time needed to ensure your systems are properly maintained, stable, fail-safe and protected.

Microsoft Security Copilot: What you need to know about the new AI-powered Microsoft Defender

30th April 2023

Microsoft Copilot original blue ribbon logo

At this week’s RSA Conference 2023, Microsoft revealed Security Copilot, an AI-powered security assistant built on GPT-4 and Microsoft’s vast global threat-intelligence network.

While the announcement made waves in the enterprise cybersecurity world, it carries meaningful implications for small and mid-sized businesses too. Particularly those without dedicated in-house IT security teams or technical IT departments.

Security Copilot is designed to help security analysts detect, investigate, and respond to threats far more quickly. It ingests signals from Microsoft’s security ecosystem; Defender, Sentinel, Entra, etc, and turns them into clear, actionable explanations. Instead of analysts combing through alerts, logs, and indicators manually, Security Copilot summarises activity in plain language and recommends response actions.

For small businesses, where the “security team” may be one overstretched IT manager or a low-level, support-focussed IT department, this type of augmentation can dramatically reduce response times.

What makes the tool particularly interesting is its ability to interpret complex security data. It can identify suspicious patterns across cloud apps, devices, identities and endpoints, then immediately provide remediation steps. The result is fewer missed alerts and a stronger defensive setup – without enterprise-level staffing.

AI isn’t just coming to cybersecurity, it is now becoming essential to staying ahead of modern threats. Attackers are already using automation, AI-crafted phishing and large-scale credential-theft operations. Tools like Security Copilot level the playing field somewhat by giving smaller organisations access to capabilities that previously required more specialised security operations.

If your business relies on Microsoft 365, Defender or Azure services, the introduction of Security Copilot signals a shift worth preparing for. We’re advising clients to evaluate how AI-driven tools can complement their existing security stack and close gaps caused by limited time or internal expertise. As these tools become more accessible, they offer a significant opportunity for SMEs to modernise their defence strategy without dramatically increasing costs.

How You Can Run Windows 11 on Apple Silicon …but with a Catch!

16th February 2023

Microsoft Windows 11 logo

Microsoft has officially acknowledged how users can run Windows 11 on Apple’s M1 and M2 Macs. The company now officially supports two options: Windows 365 Cloud PC and Parallels Desktop 18. While this clears up some confusion, there are still some hefty limitations in place, especially for users who require certain apps or more advanced features.

Run Windows 11 on M1 and M2 Macs

Before Apple switched to its own M1 chips in 2020, Mac users could run Windows using Boot Camp, which permitted a Windows install directly on their Mac. There were also virtualisation tools like Parallels, VMware, and VirtualBox that allowed users to run Windows inside macOS. But when Apple ditched Intel chips, Boot Camp stopped working, leaving virtualisation as the only real option.

Now though, Microsoft has confirmed two “official” ways to run Windows 11 on an Apple Silicon Mac, they are:

  • Windows 365 Cloud PC – A cloud-based service that lets you stream Windows.
  • Parallels Desktop 18 – A virtualisation tool that can run Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise for Arm on a Mac.

Macbook sitting on a desk running Windows 11

What’s The Catch?

Even though these options work, Microsoft warns there are some big downsides:

  • Some apps won’t work – If an app needs DirectX 12 or OpenGL 3.3+, it might not run properly.
  • No support for nested virtualsation – This means features like Windows Subsystem for Android, Windows Subsystem for Linux, Windows Sandbox, and Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) won’t be available.
  • Other virtualization tools are not confirmed – Microsoft doesn’t say anything about Azure Virtual Desktop, VMware, or Oracle VirtualBox, so it’s unclear if those will work well or get any official support.

Uncertainties Remain

While this is a step in the right direction towards official Windows 11 compatibility on Macs, Microsoft has stopped short of confirming whether or not they’ll provide full support for Windows 11 on Apple Silicon.

In the face of this, interested users should remain cautious — especially if they depend on Windows for business-critical tasks.

New Report Shows Why Secure Passwords and MFA Are Vital

30th October 2022

ESET Security logo

ESET’s October 2022 Threat Report notes a decline in Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) attacks to surprise, after years of steady growth, but makes clear this is not a sign of reduced criminal activity. Instead, attackers are shifting strategies and moving toward more targeted, stealthy intrusion methods.

The report details the discovery of a new MacOS backdoor tied to the ScarCruft APT group and updated loaders used to deploy advanced malware.

This shift toward precision attacks means businesses relying solely on traditional antivirus or perimeter controls may no longer detect early-stage compromises.

Another trend highlighted is the increasing use of compromised credentials purchased on dark-web markets. Rather than forcing entry, attackers are using legitimate credentials obtained via phishing, reused passwords, malware infections or cloud account breaches. For SMEs lacking MFA or robust identity management, this creates a silent but serious vulnerability!

The report also points to rising mobile malware activity, especially on Android devices—an important consideration for businesses using hybrid work or BYOD policies where a compromised device can serve as a doorway into your business systems and infrastructure.

The takeaway for SME’s is simple: the attack landscape is evolving, and a layered security approach is essential. Identity protection, maintenance and patching, mobile governance and 24/7 monitoring are becoming as important as endpoint protection itself. As an IT provider, we help SMEs adapt to these shifts before they become incidents – because today’s attackers aren’t brute-forcing the door anymore; they’re slipping in with valid credentials.

Cyber-Security and why it should be carefully consideration

15th June 2022

IT Security icon

In today’s modern world of tech, where large corporations, social media networks and the big hitters of Silicon Valley face hacks and data breaches that make headline news, it can be easy for small and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s) to believe they’re too small to attract serious cyber-threats. The reality however, is quite different.

Cyber-criminals no longer target only the largest organisations. What was once seen as a nuisance has become a core business risk and treating your IT security as an after-thought can be disastrous.

Many attacks succeed precisely because the target is smaller, are generally less protected, under-prepared and has fewer resources to deal with such incidents. A recent HSBC Business Banking survey found that while SME’s considered cyber-security critical, they lacked the in-house expertise and resources to manage it effectively. If an SME suffers a breach, the financial cost, operational downtime and loss of customer trust, not to mention regulatory implications, can all be outsized relative to the size of the business. IT Security isn’t just a technical issue; it’s a business continuity issue.

  • Phishing Attacks might lead to credential theft, then data loss or service disruption.
  • Ransomware Infection could lock your systems and halt operations.
  • Reputational Damage can be devastating to smaller businesses and may take month s(or years) after a breach to recover.

For SME’s, losing operation time due to a cyber-incident often costs a lot more than the cost of prevention.

Practical IT Security actions SME’s can take, immediately

Here are a number of cost-effective, practical steps you can take to bolster cyber-security in your business with the kind of managed IT service model we implore, promote, implement, manage and provide to our clients:

  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA); on all business-critical login points (email, admin consoles and cloud services) – this is essential safeguarding and adds little friction to daily use
  • Keep software patched and up to date; to help best avoid attacks which exploit known vulnerabilities in older software versions that reside unpatched
  • Back up your data regularly; and ensure those backups are stored offsite (and ideally are unchangeable) so ransomware can’t tamper with them
  • Segment devices and networks; separate your guest Wi-Fi from business systems, and limit access rights based on roles where your infrastructure supports it
  • Educate staff; phishing is still one of the most common entry points. Understanding of the most common techniques is key and regular awareness training goes a long way. These are not “enterprise-only” measures. Many are fundamental and quite feasible for even smaller businesses with the right guidance and support. We’re on-hand and ready to answer any questions or discuss your specific scenario if you’d like to talk with us, get in touch.

When to consider involving an expert

If you find any of the following apply, take it as a sign that, further professional help is likely more than justified:

  • You have a growing number of devices/users but no IT department, contracted MSP, or centralised visibility or management over them
  • You’re using cloud services (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, etc) but have no consistent security policy in place
  • You don’t have a tested incident response or “what to do if we get hacked” plan

In such cases, partnering with an MSP who understands both business and IT can help you build the right balance of security, manageability and cost-effectiveness.

For SME’s, cyber-security is no longer optional. When your IT infrastructure is secure and reliable, you not gain peace of mind, but also free your team to focus on serving clients, growing your services and staying competitive – rather than reacting to emergencies.

We specialise in helping businesses just like yours build security that fits the size, budget and the ambitions of your organisation. It’s not one-size-fits-all and we believe firmly that tailoring of solutions provides the best long-term value for businesses. If you’d like to discuss your current setup or have an impartial review of your existing IT, drop us a line.

What SMEs Should Take From the Surge in Cyberattacks

31st March 2022

ESET Security logo

ESET’s March 2022 Threat Report arrived during a period of heightened global tension, and its findings matter directly to SME’s.

The report highlights a sharp rise in destructive malware, especially wipers (currently being used in the Ukraine conflict). While that may feel remote, history shows that the tools developed in major geopolitical events rarely stay contained; they eventually circulate among criminal groups targeting everyday businesses.

One of the most relevant trends for SME’s is the continued exploitation of remote-access systems. Attackers are brute-forcing RDP, harvesting weak password credentials and scanning the internet for unpatched or poorly maintained endpoints.

Small businesses that rely on remote access without MFA, monitoring, or account-lockout policies are sitting on unseen risks.

ESET also notes increased activity from state-aligned groups like Sandworm and Mustang Panda. These groups create tools and exploits that inevitably find their way into financially motivated cybercrime, raising the baseline level of danger for smaller organisations.

For small and medium sized businesses the message is clear: the threat landscape is evolving faster than most internal teams can track.

Strengthening identity controls, hardening remote access, and enhancing endpoint visibility are no longer “nice to have” – they’re becoming essential.

As an SME-focused IT provider, we consistently see that cyber incidents often result from small gaps that could have been addressed proactively and incidents that could be avoided through proper maintenance and housekeeping. Reports like ESET’s are a reminder that it’s time to reassess security before these trends turn into direct impacts.

Windows 11 Home and Pro: Key Differences Explained

12th October 2021

Microsoft Windows 11 logo

If you’re using a PC, it’s probably running Microsoft Windows. While your personal laptop may run Windows 10 or 11 Home, when it comes to business or the professional work place, it’s important to understand the differences between the two versions.

Both Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Professional share many features, but there are key differences that could affect suitability for your use case. Here’s a breakdown to help highlight which version would best serve your needs;

The Main Differences Between Windows 11 Home and Pro

1) Domain Joining and Group Policy – one major difference is the ability to connect your computer to a business network (or a domain). With Windows 11 Pro, you can join your company’s network, which gives you access to resources such as shared files and printers.

This is essential for IT teams and work-flows that need to manage multiple computers securely. In addition, Group Policy allows IT control settings for groups of users and computers, such as enforcing password rules or blocking certain features/software; all types of system management and setup maintenance we could provide for you.

2) Remote Desktop - Windows 11 Pro allows you to access your computer remotely, meaning you can work from anywhere or receive remote help and troubleshooting support to maintain your computer from a distance (requiring a strong internet connection, of course). This is a useful tool for business owners or workers who need to access their PC or office network resources when away from the office.

3) BitLocker (Encryption) - Windows 11 Pro includes BitLocker, which helps protect your data by encrypting your hard drive. If your computer is lost or stolen, no one can access your files without your encryption key, adding an extra layer of security for businesses.

4) Hyper-V - with Hyper-V on Windows 11 Pro, you can run multiple “virtual” computers on one physical machine. This is helpful if you need to use/test different software, use multiple operating systems or simulate multiple machines without buying actual extra physical computers.

The Cost of Windows 11 Pro

Speaking strictly in terms of RRP for Microsoft licensing, Windows 11 Home costs around £119, while Windows 11 Pro is £219. If you’re already using Windows 11 Home, upgrading to Pro costs £99, which can be a more affordable option if you need the extra features. The upgrade is simple and doesn’t require reinstalling Windows.

Of course, if you’re purchasing any number of new systems, they will likely come with an OEM license of Windows, pre-installed. Some businesses may use Volume Licensing, which permits the purchase of a single license for multiple devices, making it cheaper for larger companies.

Should You Buy Windows 11 Home or Pro?

Windows 11 Home is great for personal use, like browsing the web or using social media, and is less expensive. Windows 11 Pro is better for businesses or those who need advanced features, like better security and the ability to join a company network.

Ultimately, if you’re unsure about what to choose, consider your needs or reach out to use for some impartial advice. You can always upgrade from Home to Pro later down the road if your business grows and/or you require the Pro-only features of Windows 11. If you’d like to discuss your plans or current situation, we’d be happy to help guide you.
