Apple, Microsoft & Google Release Zero-Day Patches – Why you must act quickly!
5th May 2023
April 2023 brought an unusual alignment of behemoths across the tech industry as Apple, Microsoft and Google all released urgent zero-day security patches to fix vulnerabilities that were already being exploited in active attacks. For small and mid-sized businesses this is a strong reminder that patch management isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the frontline of defence.
Zero-day vulnerabilities are flaws that attackers discover and weaponise before the vendor can issue a fix. This means organisations relying on out-of-date software versions and systems are exposed to real-world threats with no built-in protection.
In April’s case, the vulnerabilities affected major platforms including iOS, macOS, Windows and Google Chrome. Platforms and OS’s that almost every business uses daily!
Attackers use zero-day exploits to gain footholds in networks, elevate privileges, steal credentials, or deploy malware. Because these attacks often bypass traditional antivirus tools, the only reliable defence is timely patching. Unfortunately, many smaller organisations struggle with patch cycles due to limited resources, fear of disruption or lack of priority given to IT security.
The simultaneous wave of patches from three major vendors drives home a key point: cybercriminals are increasingly aggressive in exploiting newly discovered vulnerabilities, and the window between discovery and attack is shrinking.
For business owners: patching should be prioritised and ideally, automated, centrally managed or consistently monitored.
At Hedgehog IT, we can take this burden off your business and by employing considered and routine maintenance of your infrastructure or systems, can ensure your IT security is tightened with best-preventative measures against cyber threats. Our advice is to treat security updates with the same urgency as any other operational risk.
Implement automated patching where possible, enforce update requirements on employee devices and make sure your IT team (or your managed service provider) has full oversight of patch compliance. Quick action on zero-day patches can mean the difference between business as usual and a costly security incident.
If you’re unsure of your security status, when, how or if your systems are patched and up to date, get in touch and we can evaluate your current setup and situation. Our maintenance plans are cost effective and can be tailored to provide the level of service and response time needed to ensure your systems are properly maintained, stable, fail-safe and protected.
